Anti-N. legislation back in House

By

RIC STEVENS,

NZPA political reporter

The Government’s antinuclear legislation is due back in Parliament this week but its sponsor, the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, will almost certainly not be there to greet it. Mr Lange told a press conference last month that the bill would be back from a select committee before the end of

this week. This was confirmed yesterday by the Chief Government Whip, Dr Cullen. For this week’s three sitting days Mr Lange is due to be on a regional tour to Hamilton and Rotorua, today and Wednesday and on Thursday he will be in Auckland to meet the Indian Prime Minister, Mr Gandhi.

Mr Lange’s opportunity to further explain, and answer questions on, the contentious bill will come later.

These promise to be protracted because of the Opposition’s objections to its provisions banning visits by nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed warships and aircraft.

This week the bill will be reported back from the Foreign Affairs and Defence Select Committee by its chairman, Ms Helen Clark.

The reporting back is to inform the House what took place in the committee, which has received 1240 submissions on the bill since last December.
