NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets posted modest rises after a late burst of support for industrial stocks overcame early heavy selling among gold issues. Dealers said strong demand for food, banking and media issues spilt over into the resources sector as bargain hunters helped gold stocks retrace early heavy losses. Brokers cited a shortage of quality stock, a stable local currency and hopes for a cut in domestic interest rates as factors boosting demand for industrials.
