GST warning
Wellington reporter
The Government has warned retailers not to leave GST off the price of goods they are advertising.
The Minister of Consumer Affairs, Mrs Shields, said thought would be given to regulating if some retailers continued to leave GST off marked prices, misleading customers until they were about to pay for purchases.
“Consumers have the right to be aware of the all up costs of their purchases and not face unexpected additional amounts for GST at the time of paying,” Mrs Shields said.
The Government had shown leniency over such practices in the lead up to and immediately after the introduction of GST, she said.
But now all items had to be priced with their allup price, with or without mention of the portion constituting GST.
Mrs Shields said her department was now carefully looking at retailers’ pricing practices.
