Europarliament denounces executions
NZPA-Reuter Strasbourg The European Parliament has condemned Indonesia’s executing nine communists accused of plotting a coup 21 years ago and said it was a flagrant violation of human rights. It also called on the European Economic Com-
munity to report on the group’s relations with Indonesia and demanded that the executions be raised at a meeting between Foreign Ministers of the Community and the six-member Association of South-East Asian Nations in Jakarta next month. Indonesia confirmed this week that it had exe-
cuted the nine, who had been found guilty by military tribunals of plotting a coup in 1965, which failed, but which triggered bloody reprisals against the Communist Party. The executions were known about by diplomats for some days. Australia has already expressed concern to the
Indonesian Government. Diplomats said the European Parliament vote was likely to increase pressure on the Community to join in condemnation of the executions.
Community officials met in Brussels on Thursday to prepare for the Jakarta meeting on October 20 to 21. European
diplomats in Jakarta have said the Community is considering lodging a protest before the meeting. The European Parliament, which in the past has condemned previous executions in Indonesia, agreed to send its resolution to the Jakarta Government.
