Mormon peace balloons

Christchurch will be amosig one of the first places to take part in a world-wide celebration today by young women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Helium-filled balloons bearing messages of peace will be released from the Sign of the Bellbird about 8 a.m. About 40 girls in Christchurch will join 300,000 others in the world in releasing the balloons. Girls aged between 12 and 17 in 95 countries will take part. Mrs Lorraine Odgers, president of the church’s young women’s organisation in Christchurch, said the event had been set for early morning, close to sunrise, as a symbol of a new beginning.
