Better cholera vaccine

NZPA-Reuter Sydney An Australian medical team says it has developed an effective cholera and typhoid vaccine with no side-effects. The head of the team, Professor Derrick Rowley, of the University of Adelaide, said the vaccine, which had taken five years to develop, would go on sale after field trials lasting at least two

more years. The oral vaccine was highly successful in laboratory tests and could help in the development of similar vaccines for other diarrhoeal diseases, he said. “Existing commercial cholera and typhoid vaccines are not reliably effective against heavy doses of the diseases, and provide only limited immunity for a limited

period,” said Professor Rowley. “Neither are they ideally suited to developing countries where they are most needed. In addition, they often produce uncomfortable, feverish side-effects, disadvantages which the trials show we have overcome.” The new vaccine was developed with the help of the Australian pharmaceutical company, F. H. Faudling, said Professor Rowley.
