Miner killed
PA Westport A West Coast miner was fatally injured while driving an underground supply truck in the Sullivan State mine at Denniston yesterday. He was Grant William Lightbown, aged 26, of Waimangarpa, near Westport. He was taken to Buller Hospital by ambulance at 9 a.m. but was pronounced dead on arrival, said the mine’s manager, Mr Craig Smith.
Mr Smith said no-one else was involved in the accident and there was no-one at the scene when it occurred. The accident would have to be investigated by mines inspectors before further information would be given, he said.
