Waverley Star favoured at Matamata

Special correspondent

Auckland Waverley Star’s worth as a candidate for rich races in Melbourne this spring, and for the Japan Cup in Tokyo as well, could well be judged by the way he races on his home track at Matamata today.

Waverley Star, unexpectedly, was unable to finish in the first four placings last time he raced, at Awapuni on September 20. But that is one of the few blemishes on his record — from 13 starts he claims 10 wins, a second and a third. It was during the autumn that Waverley Star excelled. Last season he came back with wins in his first two races and admirers had him vying with Bonecrusher for the Japan Cup nomination. His meeting with Bonecrusher in the W.S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley would, it was thought, pro-

vide the race of the Melbourne spring carnival. With Bonecrusher a winner already in Melbourne, Waverley Star is once again in his shadow. It would be unfair and unwise, though, to judge him from his Awapuni failure. He is capable of so much more. Royal Heights looks the hardest opponent for Waverley Star in today’s Matamata Cup and with 53.5 kg (3.5 kg the lighter weight) she must rate a real threat.

Outstanding as a three-year-old last season, Royal Heights returned from a layoff to win a sprint easily at Tauranga on September 20. She has had nice time to recover from the race. Last season she won her first two races and four besides in just six other New Zealand attempts. Barusha, which won so well at Awapuni, will be another of Waverley

Star’s capable opponents and, in their reappearances after resting from racing, Threesome and Teranora will be interesting.

Threesome and Teranora are stayers which would usually find this 1600 m too short. While fresh, as they will be, they could perhaps manage it sufficiently well to get somewhere in the finish.

As they were entitled, with no race worth less than $6500, the club drew excellent fields and another good one is the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Wealleans Groundspread Handicap, a class 1 1200 m.

Cosmetique, the only one which beat Waverley Star last season, in the Castlemaine XXXX Easter Stakes, the good mare, Patricia, and last seasonjs A.R.C. Railway Handicap winner, Silver Tip, are three smart gallopers in the field.
