Amalgamation
Sir, — I am angry about the advertisement placed in “The Press,” by the Local Government Commission. The present city population has more than 50 per cent of qualified voters in the metropolitan area. Without even voting they can overrule voters from the other areas. Under the proposal representation will be one councillor to 10,000 people. This is less than the present City Council, which is one to 9000, and for Riccarton one to 1000. Even ward committees will not give Riccarton people the representation they now enjoy. There is no guarantee of cost savings at all. At present Riccarton residents enjoy excellent, decentralised services provided at a lower cost than other councils can manage. Maybe the Local
Government Commission should encourage the other councils to study Riccarton’s management system before forcing us into an amalgamation in which all councils but the City have a lot to lose and nothing to gain. — Yours, etc.,
ERICA M. JORDAN. September 26, 1986.
