Balloon first
A French physicist, Jean Francois Pilatre de Rozier, was the first man to rise into the air, on October 15, 1783. The “flight,” in an elegant and ornate balloon, lasted only a few minutes. The first airship was also launched in France, in 1852, by Henri Giffard, who progressed from his occupation as an ordinary railway worker to become a renowned engineer.
