Daniloff meetings continue

NZPA-Reuter United Nations The United States Secretary of State, Mr George Shultz, and Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr Eduard Shevardnadze ended a three-hour meeting at the Soviet United Nations mission yesterday, their fourth in a week, in an attempt to settle the case of detained American reporter, Nicholas Daniloff.

The meeting came amid hints from both sides that a settlement was possible before Mr Shevardnadze left for a visit to Canada tomorrow. Daniloff, the Moscow correspondent, of “United States News and World Report” magazine, was arrested on August 30 in Moscow and charged with spying, shortly after Gennady Zakharov, a Soviet employee of the U.iited Nations, was arrested in New York on spy charges.

Daniloff and Zakharov have both been released in the custody of diplomats from their countries while awaiting possible trial or an agreement to free them.
