Cabinet supports Rotorua plan

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington

The Cabinet has ratified the five-point plan to save the Rotorua geothermal field and its geysers from extinction.

The plan was devised by three Cabinet Ministers — the Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard; the Minister for the Environment, Mr Goff; and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, who also represents Eastern Maori in Parliament.

They flew to Rotorua last week to discuss the plan with the Rotorua District Council.

The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, said yesterday that the Government was now committed to the fivepoint plan and had referred it to the Cabinet policy committee for action.

There was a firm commitment to save the Rotorua field but the Crown Law Office would have to study the contractual obligations held over the field so that the plan could be implemented legally.

He said there had been a vociferous response against the plan from people in Rotorua.
