Maiden call by new-style vessel
One of the smart new-style ships with their own gear has berthed at the Port of Lyttelton on her maiden voyage. She is the George H. Scales, a vessel likely to become a familiar sight at port as she plies the New Zealand-to-Europe trade route. The 6583-tonne container ship is one of six vessels in the New Zealand Euro Line fleet, which is jointly run by Jebsen New Zealand and George H. Scales, Ltd. The George H. Scales is one of two vessels on the express run and will sail to Europe through the Panama Canal. She was launched six months ago at a shipyard in Oldenberg, West Germany, and is described as a hardy ship which can work at any type of port. She has two 40-tonne cranes on board and can hold 600 containers and 30 reefer containers. Her master, mate, and chief engineer are German; the remainder of the 18 crew are New Zealanders. The George H. Scales arrived at Lyttelton on Friday and is due to sail for Bluff tomorrow. ARRIVALS Klimovo (6 a.m.), 2100, sea (Scales). Coastal Trader (7 a.m.), 6736, Auckland (N.Z.5.A.1.L.).
