AUSTRALIA Markets pull back

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian share markets pulled back from record levels set last week to close mixed with an easier bias in subdued trading. Brokers said a brief midsession rally gave way to scattered selling as volumes tapered off towards the close with operators unwilling to commit funds ahead of the evening’s Wall Street trading. Brokers reported selective demand for situation stocks, but said investors were content to stand back from the market in quiet end-of-quar-ter trading following mixed signals from abroad over the week-end.

lEL went against the trend with an 18c rise to 764, after peaking at 776, with its annual profit result expected today. Among situation stocks, Herald and Weekly times eased 20 to 700 in thin turnover after heavy buying from lEL last week and ACI shed 2 to 370. Elsewhere, Woolworths rose 11 to 351 and Email was steady on 300. AWA, which is expected to release its final results today, fell 10 to 610, Ariadne was 6 down at 272, while News Corp rose 70 to 2970 and Fairfax gained 6 to 576. Elsewhere among the leaders, BHP closed 4 up at 814 after touching 816 in quiet trading, and North Broken Hill eased 4 to 226. On the mining boards, lower bullion prices and a steadier currency dampened demand for gold and mining stocks. Central Norseman and GMK eased 20 each to 1510 and 1400 and Kidston shed 10 to 790, while Emperor added 15 to 475. Among the heavyweights, 10c falls took CRA to 305 and Bougainville to 305 and Westerm Mining shed 7 to 433.
