Lost bushwalkers slept in cave
NZPA Sydney Two New Zealand bushwalkers and their companions said yesterday that they spent two nights in a cave after losing their way in the Blue Mountains. Baden Jury, who is in his 40s, and Noel Kennard, aged 36, of Christchurch, and Eric Cope, aged 42, and Anthony Mitchell, aged 28, both of Sydney, were found by searchers at 1.30 p.m. yesterday at Gaping Gil in the Blue Mountains. They were reported missing at 9 a.m. on Sunday, 12 hours after they were due back. Mr Cope told reporters that the party was walking a popular trail in the mountain range and
missed the exit by 700 m. “We overshot the exit point, and then we ran out of light, and we just had to bunk it on a nice warm spot for the night,” he said. “The next day we still couldn’t find the back exit, so it was back to the same warm cave. “We had a couple of pleasant nights actually. It has been quite warm and comfortable. We weren’t actually shivering and soaking wet.”
