Minister grants $70,000 to aid deaf
Wellington reporter A grant of 570,000 has been made by the Government to the National Foundation for the Deaf. It will be available after October 1 and is to enable the foundation to provide administrative support for people and organisations working for the advancement of deaf people. A further $37,000 has been allocated for three new field officers to help deaf people with employment, accommodation, or other personal needs. The Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Hercus, said, in announcing the grants to coincide with National Deaf Awareness Week, that it was most impressive to see deaf people working together to ensure their own needs were met as well as educating others to understand better the special issues associated with deafness and hearing loss.
