Merger talks ‘amicable’

Preliminary private conciliation talks on a proposal to amalgamate Christchurch local bodies into one city continued in an amicable and fruitful manner yesterday, according to the Local Government Commission’s conciliator, Mr Doug Pearson. • “I expect the talks will conclude on Monday and be adjourned for all representatives to report back to their councils before we resume talks on October 13,” he said. “During the talks io date two councils have not been represented because they did not empower their representatives to speak during the talks.”

Mr Pearson said it was too early to establish the common ground between the councils which had so far expressed their opinions on the amalgamation issue.
