New entertainment complex for Chch
Christchurch will have a big new entertainment complex by about mid--1988 to include cinemas, recreational facilities, restaurants, and shops on a central-city site. The proposed complex is one of three planned for Christchurch, Dunedin, and Hamilton by Skyline Theatres, Ltd, an unlisted company jointly owned by Kerridge Odeon Corporation and Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd. People visiting the Christchurch complex would be able to enjoy a complete night of entertainment on the one site, said the chairman of Skyline Theatres, Mr Larry
Vella in Auckland last evening. Modelled on Auckland’s Mid City centre, the Chase Corporation-developed complex in Christchurch would provide parking, a choice of films to view, and restaurants to eat in, with recreational facilities like ten-pin bowling and squash courts, he said. “This type of complex has proved popular in Wellington and Auckland and the trend overseas has for some time been towards bringing several cinemas together,” Mr Vella said. “There are many operational advantages in doing this. Mr Vella declined to
say where exactly in Christchurch the complex would- be. “We plan to introduce similar complexes in other New Zealand centres as they continue to prove to be popular,” Mr Vella said. Discussions will be held with council officers and civic leaders in each city with a view to incorporating additional facilities to suit the particular needs of each community and to complement Skyline’s entertainment centre. At the suggestion of the Hamilton City Council a conference centre and hotel is being planned within that complex.
