Hoki catch doubled

Wellington reporter The total allowable catch of hoki has been doubled by the Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle. Fisheries research had allowed the hoki catch to be increased from 120,000 to 250,000 tonnes for the fishing year beginning on October 1. Individual transferable quotas would be allocated according to previous commitment to the hoki fishery and would account for more than 130,000 tonnes.

A proportion of the remainder would be tendered within New Zealand and the balance, if any, would be allocated to foreign licensed nations. Mr Moyle said Ministry officials would be meeting fishing industry representatives within the next three weeks. They would discuss the development of the hoki fishery, by-catch issues, the discarding of fish and fish waste, and the prospects for the hoki resource.
