'Hot line’ busy

The “hot line” for people to make suggstions about changes to the social welfare and benefits system has been busy this week. The Government’s task force on income maintenance opened the line on Monday for people to suggest changes that would improve the system for payment of welfare benefits. The “hot line” has received about 40 calls so far, and the organisers say the response has been better than ex-

pected. Today is the last day for “hot line” submissions, which can be made by telephoning 62-050. Most callers urged tighter control on the payment of unemployment and domestic purposes benefits. Many were parents who believed 16-year-oids were using the unemployment benefit as an excuse to stay out of the workforce.

Single parents said that they wanted to return to work but feared

losing the domestic purposes benefit. Orgaisers say the “hot line” made submissions to the task force on income maintenance accessible. They have had many calls from superannuitants who would normally find it hard to make written submissions. The taped submissions will be presented to the task force in Wellington which will recommend changes to the income maintenance system, possibly as part of the 1987 Budget.
