Mrs Marie Brown, coproprietor of L. Robertson Monumental Masons, Christchurch, with a memorial stone to be erected on Pitt Island, the smaller of the two main islands in the Chathams group, to commemorate the first European settlement there. The stone was commissioned by Mr John Langdale, of Lower Hutt, a great-grandson of Frederick and Mary Hunt, who settled on Pitt Island in 1842.

Mr Langdale said he realised as a child that his forbears lived a hard, pioneering life equal to anything in the American West yet there was no memorial to them on the islands.

Now, at the age of 74, he has put that right, and plans to write a book about the Hunts’ life. Frederick Hunt left his land to his daughters’ first-born sons on the condition they maintain

the Hunt name, which gave rise to the surnames, Gregory-Hunt and Langdale-Hunt. To this day, there are Gregory-Hunts on Pitt Island. The stone will be shipped to Pitt Island in November, when the supply ship Holmdale makes her twice-yearly visit.
