Cuts for track gangs
PA Wellington The Railways will cut about 440 staff from its track maintenance gangs over the next two years in a move aimed at modernising maintenance methods, said a Railways spokesman yesterday.
The cuts would reduce gang numbers from 1440 nationally to about 1000. The spokesman said 200 staff would be shed this financial year and another 200 over the next two years. The cuts were part of the corporation’s general staff cuts, he said. It was revealed on Wednesday that the Railways planned to shed about 2700 staff, 15 per cent of its total workforce, by March next year. The Railways’ general manager, Mr Gordon Purdy, said affected staff would be offered the same early retirement or voluntary severance packages other staff had already been offered. It was expected that these packages. and natural attrition, would allow the requried reduction in numbers.
The new organisation of track maintenance would involve more mechanisation and less manual work.
