Port deficit
Sir,—While it is true that a large proportion of the cost of the crane accident was covered by insurance, the full cost of the loss of trade was not, hence the trade deficit. The loan the board hopes to raise to reclaim part of the inner harbour will be financed by the increased share of the trade Lyttelton will get by the improvement in the performance of the container terminal and the release of other areas for more efficient handling of multi-purpose vessels. I wonder what “other land” Mr K. Drayton has in mind (September 9). I would also be interested to know where he proposes to relocate the tank farm? I wonder which area would meet the approval of the oil companies, which have leases in perpetuity over the present area. If Mr Drayton balks at SIOM, that exercise would cost billions of dollars.— Yours, etc., JUDY M. WATERS. September 10, 1986.
