Govt designation lifted

McLeans Mansion is no longer designated for “Government health purposes.” The designation, placed on the former dental training school in 1958, was lifted last evening by the Christchurch City Council at the request of the District Commissioner of Works.

The mansion and its grounds were declared Crown land in 1984 and handed to the Lands and Survey Department for disposal. The mansion, formerly known as Holly- Lea, is listed as a historic building in Appendix J of the council’s District Scheme, and has a B classification from the Historic Places Trust.

The “Government purposes” designation of* the rest of the former dental school site will remain.
