Poison to be used on rabbits

Rabbits on the islands in the Christchurch Drainage Board’s oxidation ponds will be poisoned with 1080 poison. The Christchurch City Council has given its approval for the poison to be laid after refusing it earlier this month. Members of the council’s community services and health committee felt the use of the poison was unncessarily cruel. They asked the board to consider alternative methods. The council last evening approved the use of 1080 after being told it could not refuse such approval if the Medical Officer of Health had already given his consent and if the pesticide would not harm or inconvenience the public.

Because there is no public access to the islands it was considered the poison would not harm or inconvenience the public. The council, however, asked the board to put up notices in the ponds area at Bromley, drawing attention to the prohibited access and the use of poison.
