Interest on prize
PA Wellington A woman who bought a winning lottery ticket in her baby’s name, but who was not paid for eight months while it was decided if she was entitled to the money, should be paid interest, says the Chief Ombudsman, Mr Lester Castle. Mr Castle said in his latest published case notes that the amount of interest should be at the maximum rate under the Judicature (Interest of Debts and Damages) Order, 1980, and cover the period between the entitlement to the prize and the actual payment.
Mr Castle said the recommendations had been accepted by the Minister of Internal Affairs and the matter satisfactorily resolved.
