Manufacturers pick president

Mr Alan Shadwell was elected president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association at its annual meeting in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Shadwell, who succeeds Mr Bill Broadhead, has been group managing director of Mair Astley, Ltd, since 1979 arid is chairman of the New Zealand Futures Exchange, Ltd.

Mr Shadwell holds an A.C.A. and a diploma of wool from Massey University. He spent his first six years of commerce in stock and station agents’ offices, wool departments, and wool stores. From 1956 to 1961 he taught in the wool department at Massey University and in 1962 joined

Mair and Company, now Mair Astley, to develop the company’s scouring operations. He took control of the total wool operation in 1972 and moved the company into wool spinning soon afterwards.

In his present role at Mair Astley, he is chairman of the chief subsidiary companies in the group. They are Maircom (N.Z.), Ltd; Colyer Watson and Company, Ltd; Christchurch Carpet Yarns, Ltd; Mair Foods (N.Z.), Ltd; and E. Astley and Sons, Ltd.

Mr Shadwell was a vice-president of the Manufacturers’ Association and was the only nomination for the presidency.
