Warm welcome on cold day

PA Wellington The senior VicePremier of China, Mr Wan Li, arrived in Wellington yesterday to a warm welcome from members of the local Chinese community but a cold change in the city’s weather.

In spite of the grey skies, cold win, and showers, Mr Wan politely commented through his interpreter on how beautiful Wellington was and that he liked it very much. He had managed to

get a glimpse of the city from the Air Force Boeing 727 he travelled in from Christchurch.

Mr Wan, aged 70, is leading a top-level, 31member delegation to learn about New Zealand’s latest agricultural advances. About 40 members of the Wellington Chinese community, Chinese Embassy officials, and members of the China Friendship Society greeted him with bouquets and two red banners carrying the message: “Long live the

friendship between the Chinese and New Zealand peoples.” Today the delegation will call on the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, and the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Gair. Mr Wan will accompany Mr Lange to a meeting of the Cabinet policy committee and will be the guest of honour at a Ministerial luncheon at which Mr Lange will be host. During the afternoon the delegation will visit Te Maori exhibition at the National Museum.
