Police head to retire
PA Wellington The Commissioner of Police, Mr Ken Thompson, says he will step down from his job early next year. Mr Thompson, who will be 55 in May, has decided to take advantage of the police early retirement provisions and will start final leave in January. He said he had greatly enjoyed his time as commissioner. “I have also felt considerable pride in heading a service of such quality,” he has said.
The job brought heavy demands, but also offered the opportunity for professional fulfilment in greater measures than in many other jobs.
To have been commissioner in the police centennial year made him particularly proud. "As we begin our second century, the need, indeed the demands, for change will gather momentum,” he said. “I believe that I have overseen development of personnel and procedures which will help the service maintain its course and reputation.” Any announcement about his successor would be made by the Government.
At the age of 51, Mr Thompson was the youngest Commissioner of Police, taking office in November, 1983.
