Amberley golf title to Nairn
The head greenkeeper at Rangiora, Colin Nairn, proved he could play golf courses as well as prepare them when he won the Amberley 36-hole open by two strokes on Sunday.
The course, which played hard and fast, deceived most golfers and Nairn was able to take the title with a four-over par total of 148. Steven Priest kept a steady touch over both rounds and the Waimairi Beach junior finished second ahead of the Westport veteran, George Allan, and a former winner of the championship, Geoff Saunders.
Allan and the former North Canterbury No. 1, John Reid, who is now with Waimairi Beach, shared the first round lead with 735. Reid’s championship hopes disappeared on the second hole in the afternoon; he took nine on the dog-leg par-5. Leading scores.— Senior
