Police worried about hepatitis B
PA Wellington The Police Association wants policemen vaccinated against hepatitis B.
The association is concerned about its members being exposed to hepatitis B through handling bloodspattered people, particularly in high-risk areas such as Whakatane. The association’s industrial advocate, Mr Graham Harding, of Wellington, said he met police department officials to press for inoculation against hepatitis B right across police services. “There is not a police department in New Zealand which has not approached us very con-
cerned about this health risk and we will be looking for early rectification,” he said. Mr Harding said there had been a number of instances recently where police had been smeared with blood from people claiming to have health problems.
“It is not the illness of hepatitis B itself which is of most serious concern — we believe that with treatment our officers could recover within two to three months — but rather the lasting damage to body organs through cancer and induced cirrhosis.”
