Effect of speed signs doubted
Motorists would be unlikely to slow down if 50km/h speed signs were moved further away from the built-up area at the corner of Halswell Junction Road and Murphys Road, said the senior engineering officer in the Ministry of Transport in Christchurch, Mr Geoff Holland, yesterday.
The member of Parliament for Selwyn, Miss Ruth Richardson, said on Monday that she would treat shifting these signs as a matter of urgency, because of a recent fatal accident there.
Mr Holland said; however, that the Ministry policy was that certain conditions,, had to exist before speed limits were imposed. In particular, the level of roadside , development had to justify a 50km/h limit.
Ministry studies had revealed that Halswell Junction Road did : not justify shifting the signs, he said. Research had shown that motorists would not slow down if they did not believe roadside development justified speed restrictions.
