Defence report due in December

Wellington reporter

The final report in the Government’s review of defence policy is expected to be published in December. A working party chaired by the director of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Group, Dr John Henderson, has started on the report. It will pick up the results of the recently published report on the Defence Committee of Inquiry, which received submissions and commissioned an opinion poll to

gauge public attitudes on

a range of defence issues. Officials of the Armed Services, Defence Headquarters, the Treasury, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are involved in writing the next report. They have until midOctober to write a draft for the Defence Council and the relevant Cabinet committee. The Cabinet is expected to clear the final report, setting out Government decisions on future defence policy, by the end of the year.
