AUSTRALIA Markets lower

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian share markets closed sharply lower in moderate trading after investors responded to massive falls on Wall Street and other major offshore markets. Industrial issues were hardest hit, brokers said.

Highlight of the session was the announcement of an agreement between BHP, Elders IXL and Bell Group. It effectively limits future BHP take-over offers from Bell and Elders to full cash bids. But the announcement had little impact on the trading floor, with BHP easing 16c to close at its day's low of 760.

Bell -Resources was also thinly traded and closed 10c lower at 460, while Elders IXL firmed 10 to 470. Adsteam eased 40 to 1150 and Equiticorp Tasman was up 3 to 135. Selective buying interest highlighted the mining sector, with brokers reporting solid overseas demand for most leading gold stocks and heavyweight miners. Among gold miners, Central Norseman rose 100 to a record 1400, while Poseidon added 22c to 377 and Emperor finned 14 to 375. Elsewhere, CRA advanced 10 to 700 and Western Mining rose 12 to 422. MIM was also actively traded. It closed 7 higher on 227.

Lack of institutional demand and nervousness over the market’s direction after Wall Street’s collapse brought most industrials under selling pressure, particularly banks and developers. The ANZ fell 14 to 526 in solid turnover, the National Australia shed 12 to 556 and Westpac eased 11 to 472. Lend Lease lost 14 to 846, Hooker eased 13 to 215 and profit-takers trimmed 120 off News Corp at 2680.
