Iran-Iraq war
Sir, —Your article on the IranIraq war (September 11) dealt only with war. The author describes how another big offensive is going to start, but there is no mention of numerous peace efforts. The Iraqi Government has suggested peace negotiations sev-
eral times and has continuously followed up its efforts for peace. On the other side, as an Iranian, I should say that the great majority of Iranian people, who are suffering extremely from the war, want peace and freedom. They are not prepared to sacrifice themselves for the "sacred cause of Islam,” as the author claims. Such claims are found only in the propaganda machinery of the Iranian Government and have no reality among the people. The only way the Government prepares fighters for the war fronts is through forceful dispatch from the streets, schools and factories. Young people either have to go to the fronts or accept being jobless, imprisoned, tortured, or even executed — Yours, etc., P. AZADI. ■« September 11, 1986.
