Drug pushers deserve death: Nancy Reagan

NZPA-AP New York The United States first lady, Nancy Reagan, says drug pushers should be given the death penalty if they are responsible for someone’s death. Mrs Reagan made the remarks in a taped interview to be broadcast today before she and her husband, Ronald, make a televised appeal to the American public to join the fight against drugs.

“I think the death penalty should be used against anybody who is proven to be responsible for a death. And certainly, I think that drug pushers should get the maximum penalty,” she said.

Other Government officials should follow her husband’s example and take drug tests. “If somebody’s in a sensitive position, yes, they should be tested, because you’re dealing with other

people’s lives.” Mrs Reagan said that if her children were asked to take a drug test, “I would hope they would.”

She conceded that her children had tried marijuana “when they were in college ... back in the ’6os when we were going through a very rough time.”

Mrs Reagan has been active in anti-drug publicity since her husband took office in 1981.
