Waikato beats Bay

PA Napier Waikato maintained its unbeaten run in the national second division championship with a 26-12 win over Hawke’s Bay at McLean Park yesterday. Waikato scored four tries to one, and deserved the victory against an in-jury-depleted and disjointed Hawke’s Bay side in an error-ridden game. Hawke’s Bay competed vigorously up front, but had no answer to the strong-running Waikato backs, with the young wing, Paul Simonson, scoring two tries and Lau-

rie Heatherley on the other wing also scoring. Hawke’s Bay led 12-6 at half-time after playing with the wind. Its teen-age full-back, Matthew Cooper, scored all of his side’s points with two penalties, a try and a conversion. Scorers.— Waikato 26: P. Simonson (2), L. Heatherley and Stephen Burkhart tries, Andrew Strawbridge two conversions and two penalties. , Hawkes Bay 12: M. Cooper, a try, conversion and two penalties.
