Former ruler of Brunei dies
Sultan Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddin, Defence Minister and former ruler of the oil-rich Kingdom of Brunei, has died. He was 71.
Sultan Sir Muda Omar abdicated in October, 1967, in favour of his son, Brunei’s present ruler, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, now aged 39. He continued to play an active role in the kingdom’s affairs, helping guide it to independence from Britain on January 1, 1984. Brunei’s post-independ-ence Constitution was drawn up during Sultan Sir Muda Omar’s 17-year rule as Brunei’s twentyeighth Sultan.
At his death he was Defence Minister and was responsible for the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and the Gurkha Reserve |Jnit.
