The Merseyside team, ’£ winner of the classic English $ “double” last season, beat Charlton Athletic, 2-0, to stay level on points with the new leader 'while Wimbledon was beaten, 2-1, at home by Liverpool’s city rival Everton. Nottingham Forest’s win * was emphatic evidence of Ms ability to challenge for the championship, this season and was supplied by two goals each from Garry Birtles and Neil Webb and one each from Franz Carr and Nigel Clough, son of the manager Brian. Altogether 37 goals were scored in the 11 first division fixtures with West Ham’s Tony Cottee, who made his England debut as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat by Sweden last week, taking the chief individual honours.
