Identity crisis

The Hornby rugby league cheer girls had something of an identity crisis during their club’s defence of the Thacker Shield against Runanga (West Coast) at the Addington Show Grounds on Saturday. As they had been when Hornby won the Canterbury grand final from Halswell the previous Sunday, they were all decked out in their club’s black-and-white gear. But Runanga has an identical playing strip

and Hornby, as the host, was required to change. Hornby wore traditional South Island colours (white with black trimmings) as it earned its 40-20 success — cheered on all the way by a squad kitted out in what were, on the day, Runanga’s colours. In the curtain-raiser the Linwood 17-years side won the grand final of that grade, 38-20, at Hornby’s expense after leading 20-12 at half time.
