Waverley Star short priced favourite

Special correspondent Auckland Waverley Star win be the shortest-priced favourite at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting at Avondale tomorrow and under the weight-for-age conditions of his 1400 metre event it is hard, indeed, to visualise his defeat In 10 starts, Waverley Star has been beaten only .twice, at his first race day appearance when third then, by Cosmetique in the Castlemaine Easter at Ellerslie. The first time he went under by three-quarters of a length, and a length and a half, the second time and by general agreement more than a little unluckily, by a neck. The way Waverley Star returned to racing after his winter layoff, with a

sprint win at Ellerslie three weeks ago, suggested that as a four-year-old he is going to be as good as ever. The pity is that Avondale’s West End Stakes is not going to provide a much-anticipated second clash of Waverley Star and Bonecrusher, which is racing at Wanganui. Their next race together will be in Australia when they run in the W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley or, perhaps, in one of the leadup races in Melbourne. Bonecrusher’s trainer, Frank Ritchie, thought hard over the choice of Avondale or Wanganui before deciding to take the horse south. The prospect of a firmer track helped him decide on Wanganui though he also liked the chance for Bonecrusher to run over the longer distance of 1600 metres.

Tristram’s Belle and Cool Deal, both four-year-old mares from Alan Jones’ stable at Cambridge, seem to be the only horses in the West End Stakes with anything like Waverley Star’s class. In their best form they could almost be guaranteed to get something of the stake. Cool Deal, cleverly placed, has a wonderfully consistent record. He won seven races last season and was further back than fifth only twice in 16 starts. Tristram’s Belle, after being taken to Melbourne last spring, made a name for herself by winning the V.R.C. Oaks. In just her second race after a spell, and short of her best distance, she showed her quality last week with a sprint win at Te Awamutu.
