Merger upsets Coast farmers

Greymouth reporter West Coast Federated Farmers is concerned about the lack of competition in the area after the merger of Wrightson N.M.A. and Dalgetys. The provincial secretary, Mrs Alice Noble, said that while some areas had been excepted because there were no other stock and station agents in their regions, it appeared that the West Coast had been “lumped together” with Canterbury, which had other outlets. “Certain strong reservations” had been expressed by Federated Farmers about the possible lack of service, particularly in drafting and auctioneering.

Mrs Noble said that she had heard that a representative of the Elders group had been at the southern stock sales, which might or might not mean an interest in the area, and there had been rumours that Pyne, Gould, Guinness might be considering an opening on the West Coast.
