Public toilets for centre
Detailed plans for the Botanic Gardens information centre will include public toilets, in spite of estimates for the building already exceeding budget. The Christchurch City Council allotted $lOO,OOO for the centre, approved last year. Plans shown to the council parks and recreation committee set the estimated cost at $121,000. The plans included a display area, a lecture room, a reception area, a store
room, and a toilet for staff. Crs Noala Massey and Ann Grans believed public toilets should also be provided within the’building. Present toilets for the public were at least 100 m from the proposed centre, said Cr Clive Cotton. That was too far to expect people to go in bad wpfithpr Cr Ron Wright said the project was already 20 per cent plus over budget and public toilets would
increase the figure. “I believe we should, stick to the budget — $100,000,” he said. The centre would be close to the access point of the footbridge from the Armagh Street car-park, the restaurant, and the tea kiosk. It would be built near the lake and be an attractive building. The centre’s function would be to provide information and audiovisual presentations to
help people enjoy the Gardens. The committee approved the inclusion of toilets for the public in the building. Park tender approved A tender for the Porritt Park artificial hockey surface was approved by the Christchurch City Council parks and recreation committee yesterday. The successful tender of $182,617 was from Kevin Blair Construction, Ltd.
