Fund-raising fashion parade

A number of cystic fibrosis suffers will take to the catwalk this evening in a fund-raising fashion parade organised by the Christchurch branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Association.

The fashion parade, to raise money for research into the disease, will feature adult and children’s fashions, with clothing provided by several Christchurch shops. The “Spotlight Model Agency will provide the adult models, and the younger models will be cystic fibrosis sufferers and their brothers and sisters.

The event will be held at the new Twigger’s Res-

taurant at Addington Raceway, starting at 7 p.m.

The president of the Christchurch branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Association, Mr Peter Haughey, said that the money raised would go towards the continuing work of an Auckland researcher, and to the travel costs of a local pediatrician who would attend a November conference in Adelaide on the disease.

The disease is passed on in the genes and affects one child in every 2500.

It causes a severe thickening of the mucus, leading to digestive and lung disorders, which in turn lead to stunted growth and susceptibility to infection. There is no cure. Nine children had died of the disease in Canterbury in the last 18 months, said Mr haughey.
