Family approves plans
The plan to turn the Edmonds band rotunda into a restaurant is favoured by the family of the late Mr T. J. Edmonds and by the Historic Places Trust.
The Edmonds family had seen the plans and were quite happy about them, said a family member. They were looking
forward to dining in the new restaurant. Mr and Mrs T. J. Edmonds arrived from England in 1879 and started a small grocery business in Ferry Road. Mr Edmonds made there a brand of baking powder, “Sure to Rise,” which was to make his name a household word throughout New Zealand.
Mr Edmonds was a leading supporter of the Woolston Brass Band and presented the rotunda to the City of Christchurch in 1929 to mark his first 50 years residence here.
Band music attracted a crowd of several thousand to the rotunda when it was opened on December 11, 1929. :l Mrs Pam Wilson, of the Historic Places Trust’s Canterbury regional committee, said the restaurant proposal was “excellent.” “The plan seems to have been very well thought out," Mrs Wilson said. “If it is going to keep the building in use and maintain its character that is all to the good.”
The rotunda had been given a C classification by the trust, which meant it was considered “of architectural significance and to be ~preserved if possible.
