Rejuvenated Turnbull puts out titleholder
NZPA-Reuter New York The Australian, Wendy Turnbull, mixed up her shots and varied the pace of play to keep Hana Mandlikova off balance and go on to defeat the defending United States Open tennis women’s champion 6-4 1-6 6-3 yesterday. ' Ivan Lendl, the men’s top seed, eliminated 15th seed Brad Gilbert — the last remaining American seed — 7-5 6-1 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals. The fourth-seed, Stefan Edberg, of Sweden, also made it through to the quarters by knocking off the unseeded American, Dan Goldie, 6-3 6-2 6-2. The eighth seed, Henri Leconte, of France, defeated the unseeded American, Aaron Krickstein, 6-3 7-5 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert Lloyd, the top two seeds in this tournament, also advanced to the quarterfinals. Navratilova, the top seed, defeated the Argentine teenager, Gabriela Sabatini, the eleventh seed, 6-4 6-2, and Lloyd eliminated the fourteenth seed, Catarina Lindqvist, of Sweden, 6-2 2-6 6-2. The third-seeded, Steffi Graf, of West Germany, who has whipped through her opponents so far, lost her first set of the tournament before beating the unseeded Italian, Rafaella Reggi, 6-1 3-6 6-0. The fifth seed, Pam Shriver, also made it to the next step with a 6-4 64 defeat of fifteenthseeded compatriot, Kathy Jordan.
The eighth-seeded Bonnie Gadusek, of the U.S., advanced by beating compatriot Stephanie Rehe, the 13th seed, 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-2 and Manuela Maleeva, of Bulgaria, the ninth seed, advanced by beating
the West German, Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, the sixthseed, 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7-1) In another fourth-round match, Helena Sukova, of Czechoslovakia, the seventh seed, beat the 12th seeded American, Zina Garrison, 6-4 2-6 6-4. The 34-year-old Turnbull, whose world ranking has dropped in recent years to 17 and was un-
seeded in this tournament, showed her experience in . eliminating her doubles partner. Turnbull, a finalist here in 1977, defeated the
American, Robin White, in three sets to set up her fourth-round showdown against the defending champion from Czechoslovakia.
“I didn’t give her a lot of pace off the ground strokes. I jumped her around a bit,’’ said Turnbull, the oldest woman in the tournament
"It was a shock to my system that my ranking dropped to 17 and I wasn’t seeded ... I wanted to prove to myself and others that I could still play.” Mandlikova, who was tentative in the first set also seemed to be off balance for a good deal of the match. Aside from the second set, she also did not serve well, failing to get many of her first serves into play. “I feel I was a little bit cheated,” the fourthseeded Mandlikova said, referring to a call that went against her in the second game of the third set Mandlikova thought Turnbull had double faulted, but it was called in. “But I’m not taking anything away from Wendy. She played good," Mandlikova said. In a crowd-pleasing battle of the unseeded, the American, Tim Wilkison, defeated Andrei Chesnokov, of the Soviet Union, 6-0 6-2 6-3.
