Reborn Otago thumps Manawatu

PA Dunedin A rejuvenated Otago rugby team scored five tries in beating Manawatu, 37-3, in a national championship match at Carisbrook yesterday. Otago showed that it has learnt from its loss to Canterbury and attacked aggressively from the start. The first try came after 15 minutes when the halfback Dean Kenny, who

had a magnificent game, burst on the blindside and passed to Andy Hollander. The ball got to the All Black, Mike Brewer, had too much speed for defending Manawatu winger Craig Wickes and scored in the corner after an 18metre run. Ten minutes later the flying winger, Tony Lewis, just recovered from injury, flew down the opposite touchline to give Otago an 18-3 lead at half-

time. The left winger, Paul Turner, crossed for a try midway through the second half on an overlap brought about by the fullback, David Hamilton, and Brewer joining the backline. Scorers: Otago 37 (M. Brewer, T. Lewis, P. Turner, A. Hollander, L. Smith tries; Turner 3 penalty goals and four conversions), Manawatu 3 (M. Finlay penalty goal). Half-time: 18-3.
