Keen competition at Kaikoura

Rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of hundreds of competitors and spectators on the first day of the Trusteebank Canterbury Springston Trophy at Kaikoura last week.

Leading after the first day’s dressage phase was Waikouriti, with' a score of 110.67. Next was last year’s winner, Viewhill, on 119.67, with Moutere in third place on 124.67.

On the second day, the cross-country was held at Mr and Mrs Wareham’s property just out of Kaikoura. It was a beautifully clear day and the course looked a picture with jumps decorated with spring flowers, fernery and snow-capped mountains in the background. The seniors, first to go in this phase, had problems at the sixth fence. There were seven eliminations and one fall with some refusals. There were also a few stops at the Trusteebank waterjump. The Mills Toyota Tyres fourth jump spelt trouble for quite a few of the juniors, along with the fifth jump, the Muscai Research-Log, which accounted for six eliminations.

The intermediates’ problems started at jump three, the Pyne Gould GuinnessRoyal Insurance-Garden with further stops at fences six and 11. Over all the course rode very well. On the last day, at South Bay Domain, the showjumping was held. The team placings were very close and any faults resulted in changes in the order. View Hill was leading at this stage but dropped to sixth after one of. its riders incurred 30 faults with a fall. This gave Hawar-den-Waikari the lead to the finish. Results were: HawardenWaikari (branch of Hurunui Pony Club) 130.67 pts, 1;

Cheviot 133.67 pts, 2; Springston 135.80 pts, 3; Lower Waitaki 142.33 pts, 4; Windsor 152.00 pts, 5; View Hill 155.67 pts, 6.

Members of the winning team, all of whom rode ponies, were: Kate Paterson (Jindalee), Sarah Sidey (Abba), Rebecca Meyer (JaZz), Rachael Appleby (Sir Bengaman), Sandra Inwood (Royal Ace), Mandy Rutherford (Galway Dungarvan), with Mrs D. Rutherford (manager) and Mrs C. Costello (coach).

The wooden spoon competition was won by Waikouriti, from Rangiora, and Waimea. After the teams parade the presentation ceremony took place. Mr Rob McGregor, Marlborough’s regional manager, and Mr Ross Jones, Canterbury, presented the winning team with Trusteebank travel bags.

The Kaikoura Pony Club’s president, Miss Wendy Dalzell, thanked her committee and all the sponsors for their generous support. Next year’s Springston Trophy will be held in Ashburton. • • » .
