Strong bidding for prime cattle

Lightweight heifers, even those not fully prime, sold surprisingly well at the Addington market yesterday. The heifers fetched a slight premium over other types of beef as the prime cattle, sale attracted strong bidding from butchers and processors. Prime lambs and sheep had steady sales, and a big yarding of prime pigs was cleared at good prices to vendors. Prime lambs The lamb market maintained last week’s rise in the value of light and medium types. Very few lambs sold for less than $l5, and good medium types regularly sold between $l6 and $l9. Good ram lambs were $2l to $25, with odd pens slightly higher. The total yarding of 2100 lambs was only 90 fewer than last weeks. Only four Addington sales are left before the present season’s lambs will be graded as hoggets. Values were:Heavy ram lambs, to $26, with some sales to $3O. Medium lambs, $l7 to $19.40. Prime cattle After the disruption last week caused by the long spell of wet weather, the beef market returned to more regular size of 320 head. Last week’s yarding was 183. Light and medium-weight heifers easily had the pick of the market, attracting strong inquiry from local butchers and processors. Some heifers touched 200 c a kilogram, whereas most other prime beef sold steadily at 185 c to 195 c a kilogram. The over-all quality of the stock was slightly better than last week. The top price was $832 for an Angus-Hereford cross steer sold by I. G. Murdoch, of Ashburton. A Shorthorn cross heifer from G. W. Ryder, Waiau, made $522, and an Angus cow from G. S. and R. E. Taege, of Annat, sold at $560. Prime steers and heifers to 220 kg sold between 185 c and 195 c a kilogram; from 220 kg to 270 kg, 185 c and 195 c; and over 270 kg, to 195 c.
