National additions

The National Art Gallery in Wellington is exhibiting its recent acquisitions. This is the sixth consecutive exhibition the National Art Gallery has mounted of recent acquisitions. Each year a selection is presented to the public which indicates a diverse programme ranging from late nineteenth century New Zealand art through to recent developments and a smaller number of international works.

The Gallery’s purchase funds have remained static for the last five years, but the "continued generosity of the New

Zealand Lottery Board, various donors and bequests have enabled us to strengthen the existing collection,” says director Luit Bieringa. During the past financial year one acquisition made was of Colin McCahon’s “Practical Religion: the resurrection of Lazarus showing Mount Martha.” Other notable works to be acquired include Francis McCracken’s oil "Woman peeling onions” and those by several contemporary Australian artists, Mike Parr, Peter Booth, and Vicky Varvaressos.

The exhibition will end on October 5.
